UNITED ARTS CLUB POETRY EVENING – Friday 24th September at 7.30pm

Early Music: A recital of poetry and song

By Mícheál Moley Ó Súilleabháin

…I learned to love my own voice,
making a friend of it, fashioning
a fountain pen to master
the phantom language…

– excerpt from ‘Early Music’ by Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin

We emerge from this fallow season desiring to be recognised. Recognised not only by one another, but by the artform itself. This mutual recognition occurs as our society, and ourselves, again unearth the common ground where the artform breathes. This unearthing can feel irreconcilable as we continue the artistic vocation.  To break new ground, we must first gather and create community. We must recognise ourselves. To be made vulnerable, to be seen, to listen and witness artistic virtuosity and the unknown. No algorithm or safety net.  The cultural remurmuration is beginning. Intuition is our weather vane once again. We gain artistic momentum through the journey of another. Through hearing, and telling, the cascading story and poetry and music of each other’s lives.

Making his debut at United Arts Club, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin is a newly published poet and renowned singer from county Limerick. This evening event is also the first public reading of his new book of poetry ‘EARLY MUSIC’, published by the renowned Many Rivers Press (Seattle). His artistic identity lives on the threshold between things. He is a master of several worlds of music and poetic performance and composition. His way in the world exists between laughter and poignancy.

From a family steeped in Irish traditional music and academia, he gravitated to performance early, beginning as a drummer, he studied music at University College Cork. He graduated to an MA in Ethnomusicology at Irish World Academy of Music and Dance before teaching as a freelance music educator with a specialization in rap and human beatboxing (vocal percussion).
