Artist’s Statement – Colin Eaton

Architects continually question what is – what could be.  When opportunities to build diminished that curiosity and sense of invention continued for me, albeit in a different arena.  I call it ‘shifting scales’.  That shift in scale and nature provides a refreshing immediacy in the process of ‘designing and doing’. Making allows for the ‘hand of the architect’ to be shared in ways, not always possible at larger scales.

Creating something out of a single material was a welcome challenge – focussing on a sole material.  Each of my paper pieces tells its own story. A narrative in folds, cuts, tears, perforations and layers.  I have thus expanded my artistic practice to investigate possibilities in paper architecture. Creating often from discarded materials.

My artistic process is rather similar to the architectural process.  Creating … and solving. Problems become Possibilities. Brief – Assess – Create and Solve. Regardless of project scale or typology the process is the same. Architecture never leaves you!
