Artist’s statement – Derville Murphy
I like to work in both abstract and figurative styles. The abstract work allows me to explore light and colour and to paint intuitively. This is a way of letting go and escaping from the rigours of architecture and academic writing. In contrast, a great deal of my painting that could be described as figurative concerns how we think about places, and how memory affects the way we look at the built environment.
The image of the Aviva Stadium, Lansdowne Rd, shows the building from the bridge at Ringsend, and shows the impact of the building on the urban landscape. This perspective is rarely the view of the stadium chosen by the media, or the buildings users, who choose instead to project the view from leafy Lansdowne Rd, or in close proximity from across the banks of the passing River Dodder.
