Welcome to
United Arts club

I’m delighted to virtually welcome you to the United Arts Club and hope that a look around this website will give you a sense of the club’s history and its mission to be a centre for Ireland's artistic community, a place to gather, enjoy and exchange.

The UAC has moved through many phases since it was founded in the early part of the last century by some of the most interesting artists of the period. I first encountered it in the 1980s as someone just beginning to dip my toe in creative waters and found it had a slow bohemian pulse which was very intoxicating to me at the time.

Recently, there's been a new energy about the place and believe there is very bright future for the club as it continues its mission to serve the arts in Ireland through the actors, writers, painters, sculptors, filmmakers, architects, musicians and dancers, who, along with their appreciators, make up its community.

I wrote poems not cheques last Christmas.

Writing poems as a Christmas present cost-cutter: ingenious or ungenerous?

Our Irish artistic exports are world-beating, but they are the tip of an iceberg melting from the bottom.

As glamorous as the Irish arts look on the red carpet, the true health of the arts in Ireland is below the surface.

Lenny Abrahamson on the importance of uncertainty, empathising with drug addicts & knowing his best work is ahead of him.

Lenny Abrahamson is currently writing a script. I ask him how he copes with the incessant sound of poorly-played rock songs from the band busking outside.

The RHA Annual Exhibition: the annals of Irish visual art.

While the exhibition wonderfully reflects contemporary Ireland, it falls short of capturing the dynamism and dilemmas of modern Ireland.
